Starch and Sugar Content , and Related Enzyme Activity of Tomato Fruits as Affected by KC1 or NaC1 Supplement to Nutrient Solution

Abstract
This study was conducted to test the effects of supplement KCl or NaCl to hydroponic nutrient solution on the content of starch and sugars of ¢¥House Momotaro¢¥ and ¢¥Seokwang¢¥ tomatoes. The cause of carbohydrate accumulation in fruits was elucidated by analyzing activities of sucrose synthase and invertase. Starch content in KCl or NaCl of both cultivars was lower than that of the control, but the content of glucose or fructose was greater. Sugars were mostly reduced carbohydrates, glucose and fructose, and only trace amount of sucrose was detected. Salt supplement promoted conversion of starch to sucrose, and content of starch greatly decreased, while that of reduced carbohydrates greatly increased at 32 days after anthesis and later. At this time, activity of invertase was high, while that of sucrose synthase was low.
